Kundalini yoga is the most frequently misrepresented practice in the Western yoga world. White turbans, gold jewellery, and spiritual atmosphere-creation can be procured without any serious lineage transmission. This retreat is listed because the teacher holds KRI Level 2 certification — the highest credential in the Kundalini Research Institute system — and practises in the Yogi Bhajan lineage with documented sadhana history.
We also list it because Rishikesh is the correct environment for this work. The Ganges in the early morning, at 4:30am, with the mist still on the water and the Ganga Aarti fires lit on the ghats downstream — this is where Kundalini was always practiced, and that context is irreplaceable.
Sadhana is daily spiritual practice, specifically the early morning commitment: rising before sunrise, bathing in cold water (optional here), and practicing for a minimum of two and a half hours before the sun rises. The tradition holds that the hours before dawn (the ambrosial hours) produce different states of consciousness than practice at any other time. Whether or not you accept the metaphysics, the phenomenology is real: pre-dawn practice produces states that daytime practice doesn’t.
The sadhana here begins at 4:30am. This is non-negotiable and is stated clearly in booking. Women who cannot commit to this schedule should choose a different retreat.
Kundalini kriyas are specific prescribed sequences combining asana, pranayama, mudra, mantra, and bandha in fixed combinations. They are the technology of Kundalini yoga — each kriya has a specific physiological and energetic effect, documented in the teachings. The teacher here works through a series of kriyas across the week that build cumulatively.
Evening sessions are mantra and sound: chanting, with harmonium, in the small community hall on the Ganges. Kirtan twice a week, guided sound immersion on the remaining evenings. The Ganga Aarti ceremony — the nightly fire ceremony on the river ghats — is attended as a group one evening, walking down to the river after dinner.
This is not a yoga retreat in the conventional sense. It is a sadhana retreat — structured around the daily commitment of early morning practice. Women who resonate with Kundalini yoga and want to practice it seriously, in the correct environment, with a properly trained teacher, will find this retreat rare and valuable.
$820–1,100 for the week, including accommodation and all meals. The early start requires genuine commitment; this is priced for seriousness, not discounted for beginners who might not complete the programme.
