Why we list it
Vale de Moses has been running yoga retreats in the Alentejo hills since 2010 and has built a reputation that most retreat centres spend a decade trying to manufacture. It’s not glossy. The setting is a working quinta in a remote valley, four kilometres from the nearest village, off-grid and with deliberately restricted WiFi. The food comes from the garden. The river at the bottom of the hill is for swimming. The yoga is taught well.
The reasons it keeps generating some of the best retreat reviews in Europe are: the founders are serious practitioners (not entrepreneurs), the environment is genuinely restorative rather than aesthetically polished, and the retreat has stayed small when it could have grown.
The Alentejo context
Alentejo is the largest and least-visited region of Portugal — a rolling landscape of cork oak, olive groves, and wheat fields under enormous skies. Light here is different from the Algarve: hotter in summer, golden in spring and autumn, long and horizontal in a way that makes everything look significant. The silence is genuine — no traffic, no neighbours, no background hum of infrastructure. The nearest sound you’ll hear is the river.
For women who’ve been to Bali and found it too busy, to Rishikesh and found it too hot, or to the Costa Rica coast and found the sound of surf too stimulating: Alentejo is the answer.
The yoga
Hatha in the morning: well-structured, alignment-focused, incorporating pranayama throughout rather than tacking it on at the end. The founders’ approach (they trained in Viniyoga lineage) emphasises adaptation to the individual — you will not be pushed to do what your body doesn’t want to do. Yin in the evening: long-held, quiet, using the residual day’s heat to allow deeper release.
There are no workshops, no extras, no optional add-ons. The programme is the programme. This austerity is deliberate and makes the retreat considerably more restful than most.
The no-WiFi policy
Vale de Moses restricts internet access to a brief window in the evenings. This is presented to guests upfront, not discovered on arrival. Women who’ve done this retreat describe it as the first time in years they’ve been genuinely unreachable, and the psychological effect (after the initial anxiety passes, usually day two or three) is significant.
Our take
Vale de Moses is the reference point for yoga retreats in Portugal. Other retreats in this directory are worth visiting; this one is worth planning around.
Pricing note
€1,500–2,200/person for a full week. Getting there requires a car hire — the valley is not accessible by public transport. Budget €50–70/day for car hire, plus fuel. This is the main hidden cost.
