Why we list it

Costa Rica’s yoga retreat infrastructure is concentrated on its coasts — Pacific beaches, Caribbean shoreline, jungle lowlands. Pura Vida is an exception: a women-only retreat programme in the cloud forest above San José, at 1,200 metres altitude, near the volcanic zone of Poás and Barva. The environment is completely different from anything you’ll find at the beach retreats.

The altitude creates cooler temperatures and a specific quality of light and mist. Mornings begin with the cloud forest still obscuring the valley below. Afternoons clear to reveal a landscape of volcanic ridges, coffee farms, and primary forest. The hot springs (geothermally heated, natural) are available throughout.

Why the cloud forest changes practice

Altitude practice is physiologically different — breathing is less automatic, the body requires more oxygen-conscious movement. Teachers at Pura Vida adapt their sequencing for this: less intense vinyasa, more pranayama emphasis, longer savasana. The effect after several days is a heightened awareness of the breath that carries into daily life long after the retreat ends.

The women-only structure

This programme is exclusively women. The group maximum of ten ensures intimacy. The facilitated women’s circles (twice weekly, optional but consistently attended) are not therapy — they’re structured sharing space, run by a facilitator trained in somatic inquiry. What typically emerges, in our experience tracking reviews from women who’ve attended, is honest conversation about how women actually inhabit their bodies and their lives. The yoga creates the opening; the circle holds what comes through.

The Ayurvedic layer

Two Ayurvedic treatments are included (abhyanga massage and one additional treatment prescribed after arrival consultation). The kitchen follows Ayurvedic dietary principles: tridoshic, anti-inflammatory, based on local cloud-forest ingredients. The integration is thoughtful rather than theoretical.

Our take

We list Pura Vida for women who want what the Pacific beach retreats don’t offer: altitude, volcanic geology, cooler temperatures, and the specific quality of a women’s programme designed around genuine community rather than parallel individual experience.

Pricing note

$1,400–2,000 for a week with all meals, daily yoga, two treatments, and hot spring access. Proximity to San José (one hour) keeps transfer costs low — budget $30 each way.
